Week 7: Discussion#4
1. Pretend that you belong to a particular in-group in your class. You noticed that one classmate from your class does not belong to any group. What would you do? Would you invite him to join your in-group? Why? Why not?
The in-group is not owned by any individual member or participant of the said group. It is formed through the collective understanding of each individual participant for one another and it is further strengthened by common interests.
With this, I would try to personally reach out to them to assess if they would be willing to join our in-group and if they share some common interests with the group.
However, the decision is not up to myself alone but the collective decision of the group. Nevertheless, even if they decline, I would still be willing to be friends with them as long as he/she is a respectable person.
2. The Sangguniang Kabataan of your barangay approached your group in school to help them in the feeding program of the community. They also asked for the help of the other groups from your school. What would you do to help the SK officials? Would you ask the out-groups to join you? How?
First off, as a responsible member of the class, I will make an announcement to inform them about the said event. This would either be a verbal or a textual one, depending on what would be more efficient in ensuring that everyone is informed.
About the case of inviting the out-group, I will invite them to the said program since it would be better to have more manpower. Even if they are used as negative reference for our in-group for a reason, this information is unnecessary for this situation. The two volunteer groups may be socially awkward with each other but this is not about us, but those who will be benefited by the said program.
Moreover, this might be a great chance to break the barrier between the two groups. This event may also lead to the loss of out-groups since both groups would be able to understand one another, resulting to only one group in the end.
