Week 2: Discussion#2
After watching the 2 videos on the discussion page, answer the following questions in not less than 5 sentences (except for question 1).
1. Enumerate the different Filipino food and snacks in the 2 videos.
The snacks featured in the first video were: Boy Bawang, Mocca Cake, Choc Nut, Salted Tamarind, and Halo-Halo. The dishes and snacks featured in the second video were: Pancit Palabok, Sinigang, Kare-Kare, Pork Chicharon, and Cassava Cake.
2. How do you feel when other nationalities:
a. Appreciate/like our food
Given our different cultures, I am glad that we can all agree in one thing: food. Eating is one of the moments were Filipinos gather, interact, and socialize with each other. An example of which is having a family conversation at the dinner table. Aside from the good food, we also enjoy the conversations that we have while eating. With this, we can also share these moments with other nationalities. I can already imagine a good time where we try food from different cuisines as we discuss unique experiences related with our different cultures.
b. Dislike or say bad things about the food we eat
Taste is subjective. As much as others can try and enjoy our food, they can also experience the opposite. We are free to choose what we like and have different opinions about certain matters. Respect begets respect so we should respect others’ wants and opinions even if they are contradicting ours. Moreover, criticism like these can even help in changing their thoughts such as pointing out the part that they did not enjoy and adjusting it to their liking. As long as they stick with respectfully pointing out their dislikes about food and do not go beyond the line of tarnishing our very own culture, I do not think that we will arrive to any conflicts or misunderstandings. However, I still get a little bit irritated whenever they say bad things about it, especially if they did not even get to try it.
3. What is your FAVORITE Filipino food? Why? (Tell us more about the food).
Among the different and countless Filipino dishes that I have tried, sopas has still been my favorite one. Sopas is a creamy and savory macaroni soup that contains various vegetables, meat, and elbow macaroni. Its creaminess is derived from the evaporated milk and its savory taste is from the chicken broth. It is best served hot and goes perfect with cold weathers. I remember the first time that I have tried it, I kept having seconds that I almost finished the big pot by myself. The school canteen in my elementary school also served it and I always bought one if ever I had extra money at hand. One thing that probably makes it special is how seldom I have it since this makes it even more enjoyable whenever I do get to try it.
