Week 1: Discussion#1
QUESTIONS:
Looking into the PHILIPPINE situation and context, as the coronavirus is mutating:
1. What can you say about the government’s initiative in addressing the COVID 19 Pandemic? How do you feel about it?
Prevention is better than cure. With this, I feel disappointed since the government could have done more to prevent and address public health emergencies. They could have implemented preventive measures even before the current pandemic. An example of which is the Senate Bill no. 1573 Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act filed by the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago eight years ago. This would have been significantly useful at a time like this.
2. What can you do as a student to help solve the pandemic and current crisis it caused in our country, the Philippines?
As a student, I do not have any significant reason to go outside especially at a time like this. Therefore, staying at home will be my greatest contribution to decrease the cases of the virus. Learning profitable skills that can be used on an online platform can also help boost the economy a little bit while still adhering to safety. With this, some of the earnings can be donated to certain causes related to the pandemic. Spreading awareness and information online are also useful to further educate people about the current pandemic.
3. One of the reasons being pointed out why covid-19 cases rise in the Philippines is the lack of discipline of Filipinos. Do you agree with this? Why? Cite specific examples to support your answer.
Filipinos have always shown a lack of discipline. From proper public waste management, redtape, and even up until now, this can be observed on the current pandemic. A current example of which is negligence on following social distancing. This can be observed on the partial opening of the Manila Bay from its rehabilitation. Another example can even be observed on public leaders such as Senator Koko Pimentel’s violation of quarantine protocols.
